TRACKING AROUND JATINANGOR SUMEDANG
IN FRESHY AIR PLAYGROUNDS

Walking
around a little bit in freshy air is still touching when you do in Jatinangor
Sumedang Tandang. It’s in the East Region of Kota Bandung. But lately we get disturbed
on a busy roaring machine which prepares the highway through Jakarta-Cileunyi
into Sumedang till the north part of Java.
At the foggy morning, I walk through the path which is all sides in rice fields and so many trees make the street is so extremely shady and breezy. The sweats begin falling down slowly when I reach the road where so many garments and all factories stand up its building are strongly enough. In front of them, the street vendors and peddlers are always offering their products.
After ending the free market in front of factories, I see the street which connects Jakarta to Garut or Sumedang. Meanwhile I look at so far the west view from there Manglayang mountain covering cloud that sometime makes me calm to live. Many kinds of transportation can be delivering to the center of Jatinangor region.

I
take Sumedang-Cileunyi public transportation at about 10 minutes in order to
arrive in, a suburb district, in which was called “Djati Nangor” at Dutch Colonization. It was 600 hectare land as the rubber
plantation owned by Baron Baud, The plantation director at that time. This city
was named Djati Nangor based on the
grassy land over the district was grown a kind of grasses which people over
there called as Jatinangor. But the other side people interpreted as Djati nu ngora with the same meaning as
the raw Jati wood. I knew the Jatinangor history from the head leader of
Hegarmanah District.
I
often visit the town, which is right now as the education town in West Java;
where many universities is located such Padjajaran University, Winaya Mukti
University, The Indonesia Governtment College (STPDN), Indonesia Management
Cooperative Institute (IKOPIN), and Bandung Technology Intitute (ITB), for
window shopping in Jatinangor square.
Even though all Universities what I tell above have still main office in Kota
Bandung but they can’t stop growing the economical site for Sumedang after
labeling district as the education town. It actually contributes Jatinangor for
developing Sumedang City in economic sector. But unfortunately, it hardly loses
after Covid-19 pandemic.
Before attaining there, then I start
to walk in high land between Padjajaran University and Bandung Technology
Institute in Jatinangor called the campground “Kiara Payung” on foot at about 3 - 4 kilometres from the starting
point below and arriving at about 1 – 2 hours. Perhaps everyone can ride on
“Ojek” by renting around 10 K – 20K to be there with 10-20 minutes. Sometime
many students from those Universities just used it for leadership camp
activity. I pay only 20K to camp there.
When
arriving campground, I stand out in one of side angle where I can see a
Rancaekek-Tanjungsari ex-railway that people surround called Cincin Railway. It had a mysterious
stories upon this railway because it was built by salt mine people from Dutch
East Indies and they buried below it.
From the rooftop, the wonderful scenery can
be depicted all Universities, Manglayang
Mountain, Geulis hill, the ring
design of the railway, beautiful ten sturdy pillars sticked up, graceful lodge
bell’s pillar with some flowers in Loji
Park upon Cikeruh-Hegarmanah district compose the magical view in my heart . The
freshy air up there make me comfortable to stepping bye the campground. It has
got up my imagination to leisure more deeply about Jatinangor.

Wearisome around
the Campground, I remind that I will see my friend who is indigenous from
Rancakalong a part of Sumedang districts. But before I am going to meet her, I
would like to relax time with some snacks upon Sumedang by tasting Ubi
Cilembu that is like sweet potatoes. In the main road Sumedang Bandung,
the vendors who sell souvenirs and typical snack are so many. Ubi Cilembu can
be deserved in steam or roasted which will be out of sweety liquid from. It’s
so amazing taste. To eat this sweet potato should be with green hot tea or
plain hot tea in the high land at Campground “Kiara Payung”. You have to know
these sweet potatoes can’t be as sweety as the original one when it is planted
in another sub district beside Cilembu subdistrict. That’s why we call it Ubi
Cilembu. It contains with so many vitamins like “Vitamin A 7.100 IU
(International Unit); Calcium with 46 mg per 100 gram, Vitamin B-1 0,08 mg,
Vitamin B-2 0,05 mg, Niacin 0,9 mg, Vitamin C 20 mg. “ said Agustina Monalisa Tangapo who took her
doctoral level as a student in ITB as
her research. So how enrich Vitamin from Sweet Potatoes is, right! Actually
everyone can be buying it per kilo at about 6K till 8K.
The
other snack what I like very much is Tahu Sumedang. It’s kind of Tofu which
fried in having creamier and the empty inside with being served in lontong
(a dish from rice cake with the form of cylinder wrapped inside a banana leaf) and hot chilli sauce, soya hot chilli sauce or
bird’s eye chilli. Both Ubi Cilembu and Tahu Sumedang can be a
gift for your neighbours or family if you come to pass bye from Sumedang.

As
I get everything I need to fill out my soul for imagining the euphoria day in
travelling around Jatinangor. I must meet my friend comes from Sumedang. She
would like to see in my school. At about twenty five till an hour from
Jatinangor through Kota Bandung by taking in a bus, I have arrived for this
little bit interview about curious suburb Sumedang City especially Jatinangor.
So
excited noon when finally I met my friend who has ancestors in Sumedang, She
told me when there are people, who have an activity to finish the yield in the rice
field and to welcome for dancing to purpose grateful through Sri-Goddess who
actually in Sumedang was called as Nyai Sri Pohaci. The chosen people
were just being able to Tarawangsa dance. But after this
decade, everyone who would like to learn the dance is permitted by karuhun
(the tribe). The belief to God and Goddess is as the cultural heritage from
Sumedang even though more people are muslims; they are still faith to the God
and Goddess. Some time they will do to the girls who grow into adult people for
ritual endeavour through God or Goddess blessing. It’s habitually on taking splash over the girls’s
head at midnight. The cultural heritage must be learnt more deeply to enrich
the knowledge so that everyone can carefully say or do something through
Sumedang people.
Tarawangsa frankly is the same kind as high Rebab as the influenced
Arabian music instrument. It was taken around the 15-16 Ages. The Tarawangsa exhibition
was usually showed by playing two kinds of music instruments, Tarawangsa (high Rebab) and Jentreng according to Rancakalong’s culture,
Sumedang.
Learning
from Sumedang history, Prabu Geusan Ulun is Sumedang figure
who had the bravely hero to relinguish Sumedang from the west authority (Lebak
Banten) and east authority (Cirebon) Of West Java Kingdom. He reigned the
kingdom at 1579 till 1601 as Prince Angkawijaya; The cultural features of his
government was bravely to state independence through another block, hinduism,
obey to his parent rule. His ancestor was Prabu Tajimalela had given Sumedang
name for his authority land; it was from Insun Medal Insun Madangan which
meant “I was born; I illuminated”. But because of hard to
pronunciation from Sun Madangan taken of
Insun Madangan, sometime people said “Sumedang” for making an easy
calling this city. Then the other word after Sumedang is Larang as the first time meant that Sumedang people were the best
competitionner. Because of that, the historical story about the abdicating
throne from Prabu Tajimalela to his sons, Prabu Lembu Agung and Prabu Gajah
Agung who weren’t interested in governing the kingdom as the good lesson for
the best abdicating throne in West Java is, actually. He only asked for the simple work to his sons such waiting Sword and Young Coconut Grains. The
loser should be the next king. How
interested story, didn’t it?
After
speaking about the cultural heritage and the ancestors of Sumedang till the
real name “Sumedang”, we talked more about where the place are attractively to
play for the kids. It’s in Ciherang Village and Jarami Village. These two
playgrounds are recommended to try on. Beside the freshy air, real forest, and
the challenge in playground are motivated to be great for making our kids
learning about life. Kampung Ciherang or
Ciherang Village offers all naturally tour. Everyone can feel wild nature, to
let out the tiring problem in life’s activities, he can rent a hammock by
sleeping with the breezy wind upon him at about 5 K till 12 K for his relaxing
time through himself or with his family group. He can step ground through the
village when he is an active person. But for visitors who loves relaxing while
going to camp; this challenge can be recommended to find the freshy air and
safety. Not only to camp but also cook you can do together with your family. You
just spend 10 K till 40 K per person for joining to the activities in Ciherang
or Jarami Village. For visitors who love extreme games, they can take Arung Jeram.
The
alternated place to get relaxing for one’s leisure in Sumedang West Java is
going to be able to promise through domestic and international visitors that
there are some naturally places as the villagers. They knows how to live such
in semi jungle, get a camp and every kind of heritage cultures which are still
preserving from the harm human whom he will destroy it. We hope the cultural
heritage from Sumedang will make everybody learn about Indonesia culture,
especially West Java.
